10 January 2025 - Electric Arc Furnace Delta Roofs In Focus
In the early 1990s, Trent revolutionised the refractory industry by introducing a chrome-based material for manufacturing precast Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Roofs and Deltas. This innovation marked a significant advancement in furnace roof technology, and we continue to refine and develop this technology today.
Our precast EAF Roofs and Deltas replaced earlier designs that utilized Silica and later High Alumina bricks. The newer designs demonstrated superior performance and addressed critical safety concerns, such as the frequent cracking and collapsing of brick roofs into the furnace. By using our unique material, Trent not only enhanced safety but also provided a cost-effective solution with a longer service life.
In an Electric Arc Furnace, scrap metal is melted through a combination of electrical and chemical processes, generating extremely high temperatures—often exceeding 1700°C. The refractory EAF Roof and Delta play a crucial role in enclosing the furnace to minimise energy loss while withstanding exposure to slag and metal oxides. The refractory material surrounding the electrodes must also provide excellent insulation to combat thermal wear caused by the intense heat of the furnace.
Manufactured at our facility in Scunthorpe, our EAF Roof Deltas are widely recognised and respected within the UK market. At a local steelworks, one of our roofs achieved a record lifespan of over 1,000 heats. Each roof is custom-designed to meet specific requirements and can include built-in air economisers if desired. Additionally, we produce economiser rings to complement our Deltas and offer a range of castables to deliver optimal value and performance. For those seeking environmentally friendly options, we also provide the option of green chrome where specified.
Trent's EAF Roofs and Deltas continue to set the standard for quality, durability, and innovation in the industry.
